House Renovation With Fittings

What on earth does this mean? Well if you are looking to sell your house and want to do as little as possible before you sell it then one of the easiest ways is to renovate with fittings i.e. renovate your house by replacing the fittings around the house. So what are some of the fittings that you can renovate your house with – the first that comes to mind is door handles. Have you noticed that these fittings often look shabby, old and knocked about. Have a look at the handles of your bedroom cupboards, kitchen cupboards and general doors. I’m sure you’ll find that those particular fittings are looking a little worse for wear. Now imagine going out and buying a whole new set of handles at your local hardware store and replacing all of those old worn out ones back home. This is simple house renovation with fittings.

Next I would be looking at your windows.

What sort of coverings do they have? Curtains, Holland blinds, venetian blinds? Usually whatever it is these are also starting to look a little worse for wear as well. When renovating with fittings, I generally look at replacing the window coverings with Holland blinds. These are the blinds that roll upwards into a roll at the top, using a cord at the side to control how far up or down they roll. It’s easy to source very cheap Holland blinds and they always look crisp and clean provided they match the colour scheme of the room – which will be the case if the colour scheme is subtle and not blaring in your face. The next step to house renovation with fittings is looking at the light switch coverings. These often have bits of left over paint splashed on them or if they are a white colour, have often gained a yellowish tinge from age. If these fittings are modern, it’s possible to just buy the covers and snap the old ones out and the new ones on without the help of an electrician. But if they don’t have this face plate, you will have to hire an electrician for half an hour to go around the house and replace them. Are you getting a feel for what renovation with fittings is ?

The next step to renovation with fittings is your taps. Believe it or not, certain styles of taps go out of fashion and they also begin to look very grotty after a couple of years. A good scrubbing can help, but often replacing them will improve the look of the room drastically, whether it be kitchen or bathroom. The final step to renovation with fittings is broken tiles and cruddy or non existent grout. These two factors will make a kitchen splash back or a bathroom look terrible. So just replacing and broken tiles or stripping out the grout and regrouting will again improve the look greatly. Grouting these days is easy – you can even get grout in tubes and just squeeze it out into the gaps between the tiles. Then wipe over several times with a damp cloth to remove the excess. So they are the basics of house renovation with fittings. 3 Great (Fun) Books for Old House Renovators

On August 24, the Oregonian reviewed a new children’s book aimed at families who know a thing or two about living in a construction zone. Creaky Old House: A Topsy-Turvy Tale of a Real Fixer-Upper is for ages 4 and older, but I have to say I was intrigued by the title and identified with the blurb, which begins, “The family loves their creaky old home just the way it is–until the front doorknob falls off.”

That’s exactly what happened to me and my husband when we bought our first home, a 1912 Craftsman bungalow in Tacoma, Wash. Just like cooking aficionados enjoy memoirs about cooking as much as they enjoy new cookbooks, old house renovators on occasion like to partake in literary commiseration, in between reading how-to guides.

Here are a few books that may entertain, enlighten, and perhaps inspire you, too:

Adventures With Old Houses, by international financier Richard Jenrette and photographer John Hall. You can live vicariously through the author, described by friends as a house-aholic, who at the time of the book’s publication in 2005 owned six historic properties, most of them dating back to the early 19th century. Over the previous 30 years, he’d restored eight other homes, as well as an antebellum hotel. The book details Jenrette’s “personal account of the quest, the acquisition, the restoration and the furnishing of each property.”

The Home Repair Is Homicide Series by renovator-author Sarah Graves includes titles, Tool & Die, Unhinged, and The Book of Old Houses, among others. The Miami Herald described her work as “Mixing slaughter with screwdrivers.” Similarly Kirkus Reviews said her work is “Packed equally with incidents and tips on household repair.”

On Moving: A Writer’s Meditation on New Houses, Old Haunts, and Finding Home Again, by Louise DeSalvo, explores the interesting phenomena that occurs when you are on the verge of moving. “Suddenly the old, cramped house was paradise, and the new house a barren building with none of the comforts or familiarity of ‘home.’” DeSalvo, a memoirist and scholar, goes on to chronicle the moves of famous literary figures Percy Shelly, Virginia Woolf, and poet Mark Doty, who sells the house he and his dying lover spent decades renovating.

Now the question is–which book do you read first? Put down that stale-as-toast home improvement hardcover and head to the library for a dose of something a little different.
